1. 1. What specific details in Herodotus’s description of Nubian culture, society and geography are consistent with the information provided in Traditions & Encounters? What details are inconsistent or contradictory?

According to Herodotus, the Ethiopians were the handsomest and tallest men that ever lived. Their customs greatly differed with those of other human beings and specifically on how they elected their kings. They chose the tallest and strongest men to rule over them. The spies were informed that the kings lived for 120 years or more and this is because they only ate boiled flesh and milk. For the Ethiopians, silver was the most valuable and scarce metal. They made coffins from crystal whereby they dried the body in some way and covered the whole body with some gypsum and adorned the body with painting until the body resembled a living man. Gypsum was abundant in this area and they hollowed it to create room for the dead body and placed it in a crystal pillar. One was able to view the body through the pillar without any unpleasant odor and all parts of the body were clearly visible. The body was kept in the crystal pillar for a whole year by the next of kin and it was given fruits and also honored with sacrifice continually. When the year elapses the body in the pillar was set up at a place near the town. (Robin, 1998)

2. Do any parts of Herodotus’s account strike you as farfetched? If so, then how might one explain these perceptions or myths?

In one instance Herodotus says that kings lived for more than 120 years and they only ate boiled flesh and milk. In as much as the life expectancy might have been higher, a life expectancy of more than 120 years seems far fetched. Herodotus in saying this might have wanted to portray the powers of such kings and their immortality.

In another case, Herodotus describes the table of the sun as a meadow in the city skirts, where there was boiled flesh from all types of beasts. This meat was stored by magistrates each night and in the day people would come to eat. This seems far fetched because the area is on a desert and there was scarcity of food. In saying this, Herodotus might have wanted to illustrate the wealth of the Nubians.

3. How much of Herodotus’s information was based on his own personal experience? How much was based on other sources and hearsay? Does he distinguish between the two?

In the excerpts from Herodotus’s histories, most of the information is given on account of the experiences by Herodotus himself however in some instances it is clear that he got some information from the spies. He stated that spies were told the kings lived for over 120 years and ate boiled flesh and meat. This suggests that he might have gotten that information from the spies. Evidence of hear say is also clear when he writes that it was said that the Ethiopians were the handsomest and tallest men in the entire world.

4. Based on all of the above, would you consider Herodotus’s account useful as a historical source? Why or why not?

Herodotus’s accounts though they have a lot of exaggerations and hearsay, are a useful historical source; these excerpts have some truth in them, and if one was to carefully analyze them, they give a picture of the aspects of the Nubian’s lives. Such excerpts are very useful as they give first accounts of the actual happenings in that period; they are also useful because they provide the foundation for secondary sources. posse.

Germanic speakers referred to Britons as Welsh. This term eventually came to be applied exclusively to the inhabitants of what is now Wales, but it also survives in names such as Wallace, and in the second syllable of Cornwall. Cymry, a name the Britons used to describe themselves, is similarly restricted in modern Welsh to people from Wales, but also survives in English in the place name of Cumbria. The Britons living in the areas now known as Wales and Cornwall were not assimilated by the Germanic tribes, a fact reflected in the survival of Celtic languages in these areas into modern times. At the time of the Germanic invasion of Southern Britain, many Britons emigrated to the area now known as Brittany, where Breton, a Celtic language closely related to Welsh and Cornish and descended from the language of the emigrants, is still spoken. In the 9th century, a series of Danish assaults on northern English kingdoms led to them coming under Danish control (an area known as the Danelaw). In the 10th century, however, all the English kingdoms were unified under one ruler as the kingdom of England. In 1066, England was conquered by the Normans, who introduced a French ruling élite that was eventually assimilated. Wales came under Anglo-Norman control in 1282, and was officially annexed to England in the 16th century.

On 20 October 1604 King James (who had succeeded separately to the two thrones of England and Scotland) proclaimed himself as “King of Great Brittaine, France and Ireland”, a title that continued to be used by many of his successors. However, England and Scotland each remained legally in existence as separate countries with their own parliaments until 1707, when an Act of Union joined both parliaments. That act used two different terms to describe the new all-island state, a “United Kingdom” and the “Kingdom of Great Britain”. However, the former term is regarded by many as having been a description of the union rather than its formal name at that stage. Most reference books therefore, describe the all-island kingdom that existed between 1707 and 1800 as the “Kingdom of Great Britain.

The island was first inhabited by people who crossed over the land bridge from the European mainland. Traces of early humans have been found (at Boxgrove Quarry, Sussex) from some 500,000 years ago and modern humans from about 30,000 years ago. Until about 10,000 years ago, Great Britain was joined to Ireland, and as recently as 8,000 years ago it was joined to the continent by a strip of low marsh to what is now Denmark and the Netherlands. In Cheddar Gorge near Bristol, the remains of animal species native to mainland Europe such as antelopes, brown bears, and wild horses have been found alongside a human skeleton, ‘Cheddar Man’, dated to about 7150 B.C. Thus, animals and humans must have moved between mainland Europe and Great Britain via a crossing. Great Britain became an island at the end of the Pleistocene ice age when sea levels rose due to isostatic depression of the crust and the melting of glaciers.

Its Iron Age inhabitants are known as the Britons, a group speaking a Celtic language. The Romans conquered most of the island (up to Hadrian’s Wall, in northern England) and this became the Ancient Roman province of Britannia. For 500 years after the Roman Empire fell, the Britons of the south and east of the island were assimilated or displaced by invading Germanic tribes (Angles, Saxons, and Jutes, often referred to collectively as Anglo-Saxons). At about the same time Gaelic tribes from Ireland invaded the north-west, absorbing both the Picts and Britons of northern Britain, eventually forming the Kingdom of Scotland in the 9th century. The south-east of Scotland was colonised by the Angles and formed, until 1018, a part of the Kingdom of Northumbria. Ultimately, the population of south-east Britain came to be referred to, after the Angles, as the English people. scienceshops.

The American war for independence also known as the American Revolutionary occurred between the period of 1775 and 1783. This conflict erupted and war broke out between the revolutionaries who were the thirteen British colonies and Great Britain, who declared their intention for independence like the United States of America in the year 1776. The war was accelerated by the rising revolutions that were undertaking in the colonies in the struggle against economic and political policies imposed by the British Empire. The war spread out far and wide, further than the British North America. The conflicts made many Native Americans to be divided along the war lines and they fought on each side of the conflict. The British used their naval superiority to capture territories and occupy them, mostly the coastal cities. They could not control the countryside where the majority of the people lived. In 1777, America gained victory at Saratoga which compounded the revolution and escalated with the entrance of Spain, France and Netherlands war against Great Britain. With the participation of the French, triumphant naval victory was witnessed in Chesapeake in 1781 leading to a decisive surrender of the British army at Yorktown. In 1783, the independence of America was recognized by the Treaty of Paris.

Colonists were divided in the American revolutionary on which side they would support the war with some areas experiencing civil war in their struggles. The colonists loyal to Britain departed from America and settled in other British colonies mostly Canada, to evade the conflicts with the revolutionaries. When the war commenced, the American revolutionaries did not have a standing army and relied on traditional defense systems where each colony used local militia tactics and methods. This affected their extended operations in the fight coupled with the fact that the militia groups did not have the adequate training and discipline that is mandatory for regular soldiers. Though they sometimes succeeded to suppress loyalist activity and occasionally against the British troops. This plight led Americans to seek ways that they would coordinate military efforts and train a regular army. In 1778, the North America colonial rebellion translated into an international war, where France joined United States after learning the Saratoga victory. Spain joined the war as allies of France in 1779 while Netherlands in 1780 as combatants. The three countries were disquietly giving financial aid to the revolutionaries since the commencement of the war, to mitigate Britain’s emerging status as a superpower. Britain had superior naval strength over the American revolutionaries, but with entrance of the French, it contested the British superiority. Spain joined the war with the mission of invading England to recapture Minorca and Gibraltar.

Government setup contrasts

The Canadian government was created based on parliamentary democracy which had strong democratic traditions with the Queen of Canada as the head of state and a federal system of government. Canada’s constitution governs the lawful structure of the country’s traditions and conventions. The Senate of Canada does not have adequate power to oppose or initiate legislation because it is selected by the Prime Minister. However, the United States has a regionally elected senate therefore there is equal power in the regions which make it more unified as a country as opposed to Canada which lacks the balance. The president’s power in the U.S is balanced in the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Conclusion

Historians have often developed theories that would explain the loss of Great Britain in the war which they were expected to win. The Empire had military advantages from the beginning primarily because of the naval superiority and professional regular military over its Dominions like America. The major disadvantage that faced them was the distance in shipping supplies and troops across the Atlantic Ocean. The Americans had the advantage of local sources of food and manpower and knowledge of the territory unlike the British who were compounded by logistical problems. siswo.

Introduction

Canada’s fight for independence was unlike the United States. Canada gradually evolved peacefully as a nation while the United States became an independent country through an armed revolution.

Contrast between Canada and United States fight for independence

During the period of 1867, a Confederation of six colonies of the British North American joined to form a new country, Canada. Then gradually, the military, financial and administrative support from the British slowly reduced as the new formed country took charge and more responsibility in the control of its future and destiny. This was strengthened by the fact that Canada had sent many troops to fight with Britain and its participation in the First World War. Great Britain’s application of the Statute of Westminster to its dominions from the Acts of Parliament, granted New Zealand, the Irish, Newfoundland, Union of South Africa, Australia and Canada full independence.

This statute only consecrated practices that had already been established firmly by Great Britain. With Canada, the road to independence began with Britain’s grant of a responsible government and finally legislature to it’s’ colonies from the period of 1847 to 1848. The crowning of the Confederation in 1867 had the intention and purpose of giving Britain’s dominions the complete control of their governance and internal affairs. This saw the gradual take over of the colony’s governments from Great Britain’s control.

The most critical event that fostered Canada’s independence was the withdrawal of British Armies in 1871 from Canada, followed by the Washington Treaty which took place in the same year. The treaty included a Canadian who joined the British negotiating team that would lead to deliberations and the signing of the treaty on Canada’s behalf. These events led to the development and establishment of a Supreme Court in Canada in 1875. This process was accelerated by the First World War with the support of Canada to Great Britain’s troops in the war. Canada grew and evolved in the international scene during the period of post World War. The country participated in the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919 and was also elected to be a member in the League of Nations. Great Britain recognized its former colonies to be autonomous communities as was the British Empire through the Balfour resolution of 1926. The Dominions were considered as equal in status and were not subordinate in any way with reference to aspects that pertained to their external or domestic affairs. They were recognized to be members of the British Commonwealth of Nations united by their common allegiance by 1931. costituzione.

After Solomon’s reign the nation split into two, Israel and Judah. Israel was 10 tribes in the north and Judah and Benjamin were 2 tribes in the south. Israel was conquered by the Assyrian ruler although there are no accepted records that prove the 10 tribes existed. A Babylonian army conquered Judah but after the Persian conquest of Babylonia the Judaists returned to their homeland Judea flourished under the Persians and then the Greeks. There was a period of Hellenistic Judaism and after the death of Alexander the Great there was a deterioration of relations between the Hellenized Jews and religious Jews. Decrees banning certain Jewish religious rites and traditions were imposed and consequently the orthodox Jews revolted under the leadership of the Hasmonaean family. This led to the formation of an independent Jewish kingdom known as the Hasmonaean dynasty which was followed by Herodians. Eventually the Jewish power in Judea declined and it came under the direct rule of the Romans. skorea.

The Jewish people have the most complicated history of any race. Never really having a land of their own, they were persecuted all over the world. Traditionally, Jews all over the world claim to be descended from the ancient Israelites. Jewish tradition says that the Israelites were descendants of Jacob’s twelve sons (one of whom was Judah) who settled in Egypt. The exodus of the Israelites to Canaan, led by Moses, marks the formation of the Israelites as a people, divided into twelve tribes named after Jacob’s sons. Jewish tradition and the Bible tell us of the forty years the Israelites wandered in the wilderness and conquered Canaan under the command of Joshua. The land was divided between the twelve tribes which were eventually led by King David who conquered Jerusalem. David’s son, Solomon, built the First Temple in Jerusalem. sverige-info.

Of course, Jewish identity goes back much further to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Because there are different denominations of the Jewish faith, interpretation of what is a Jew is still a little blurred. Reform Jews believe that a Jew can have either a Jewish mother or father, whereas the Orthodox Jews and Conservative Jews still hold with tradition and believe you are a Jew if your mother is a Jew. As for converted Jews, which denomination converted you? Orthodox Judaism has very strict standards, Reform Jews are much more liberal and the Conservatives are somewhere in between. The Supreme Court did not make it clear what they meant by conversion and this is a grey area, even today.

One thing is for sure, Jews are not a race. A Jew can be American, French, German, or English and be as loyal to that nation as anyone else. When Jews speak of a Jewish nation it is meant in a spiritual way rather than a geographical way. tagheuerformula.

We have all heard of Jews and understand that Israel is now considered their land, but Israel is a very young country and Jews are the most ancient of people. The Jewish people had no nation, no land, and no empire for centuries yet they survive as strong as ever. Through the centuries they have been persecuted, exiled and slaughtered which makes it even more remarkable that they have survived.

A decade after Israel’s independence a bill was passed called the Law of Return. This law guaranteed automatic citizenship and right of entry to every Jew around the world. Because of this law the Israeli government had to come up with a definition of what makes a Jew. They said that ‘Anyone declaring in good faith that he is a Jew, and who does not profess to any other religion, shall be registered as a Jew’. Because this statement basically says that you are a Jew if you say you are, Israel’s Supreme Court had to define it further, stating that ‘for purposes of this Law of Return, a Jew is someone born to a Jewish mother, or converted to the Jewish faith and not a member of another religion’. xtracms.

Bieber has already stated that he wants to appear in one of the show’s digital shorts, which have featured the likes of Rihanna and Justin Timberlake. He sent out his request via Twitter, saying, “Shoutout to @BieberOnSNL and all the other fans who support me. It’s happening! SNL in APRIL!! Digital Short Music Vid??”

After collaborating with rapper Ludacris and joining forces with reggae fusion singer MC Sean Kingston, Justin Bieber is now longing to make a duet with Lil Wayne. “I want to work with Lil Wayne…once he gets out of jail,” he told E! News during an event at Northview High School in Covina, California.

The pop phenomenon didn’t mention which songs he might perform on the show, but he did mention that he already had a special guest in mind for his big debut: “Me and Chuck Norris should do SNL together,” he wrote. “That would be good. Very good.” SNL is always full of surprises. We might see them a skit where they zoom about on rollerblades, or learn kung-fu! You never know what’s coming next on SNL.

Bieber’s “SNL” appearance comes shortly after the March 23 release of My World 2.0, the follow-up to his 2009 album My World. Bieber recently sang the opening line in the Haiti-benefiting remake of “We Are The World” and he just released the video for My World 2.0’s first single, “Baby.”

MTV News was on set with Bieber when he shot the clip, which features cameos by Drake and Ludacris. “It starts off, I really like this girl, but we didn’t [get] along; we couldn’t be together” he said.

“Basically I want her back and [I'm] kind of going through the whole thing. I’m chasing her around, trying to get her, and she’s kind of playing hard to get, but I’m persistent. I keep going.”

There is chance that Justin’s duet wish could come true as Weezy himself has given a shoutout to the young Canadian pop sensation during a Ustream session on Young Money’s artist Lil Twist’s site. The rap mogul apparently has recognized that Justin fever already swept the country and he could be the next big thing in music industry.

Justin Bieber is preparing to release a new album titled “My World 2.0″ in the U.S. on March 23. He recently tweeted about what to expect from the upcoming release, writing on the micro-blogging site “EXCLUSIVE NEWS ON MY WORLD 2.0- so happy with the songs the 2.0 part wont have 7 more new songs..it will have 10 MORE NEW SONGS!! LETS GO!” Additionally, he will appear in “Saturday Night Live” on April 10, serving as a musical guest and wishing to take part in one of the digital shorts.

As for Lil Wayne, this MC has undergone eight root canal procedures to fix his teeth and will be back to the courtroom for a one-year sentencing on March 2. To tide fans over while he’s away to serve his jail time, he has shot at least nine music videos which will be premiered one after another during his absence from the music scene. Most recently, he opened a Twitter account to keep in touch with his fans. aidim.
